Competition System

The 3x3 Olympic tournament is played on 1 unique main court.

Schedule

  • The event is structured in 17 different sessions of 4 games (2 women’s and 2 men’s games + entertainment).
  • On Days 1, 2 and 3 (July 24, 25 and 26), there are 4 sessions of pool games everyday (10.15-12.25 local time [GMT+9], 14.00-15.50, 17.30-19.30 and 21.00-22.50). 
  • On Day 4 (July 27), there are 2 sessions of pool games (13.30-15.30 and 17.00-18.50) and a 3rd session of "quarter-finals" (20.30-22.50).
  • On Day 5 (July 28), there are 2 sessions: 1. for the semi-finals (17.00-19.10), 2. for the medal games and the prize ceremony (20.45-23.25)

    NOTE: The order of the quarter-finals and the semi-finals may vary for TV reasons. The schedule of these two rounds may therefore be updated on the schedule page of the website. In other words, please wait for official communication from FIBA and the IOC for the exact timing and order of these games. 

Format

  • The event starts with all 8 teams (per gender) in one single pool.
  • Every team plays each other (2 pool games per day on Day 1, 2, 3 and their last pool game on Day 4).
  • The teams ranked 7th and 8th in the pool are eliminated.
  • Those who finished 1st and 2nd are directly qualified for the semi-finals.
  • Those who finished 3rd to 6th meet in 2 different qualifying quarter-finals, which will take place at the end of Day 4.
  • Day 5 is dedicated to the semi-finals and the medal games.
