RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Jonas Valanciunas capped a disappointing Olympics with a sub-par performance in a 90-64 drubbing by Australia in Wednesday's first Quarter-Final.
The Toronto Raptors giant had 8 rebounds but only 5 points.
When asked in the press conference why Valanciunas had struggled in this tournament - he went into Wednesday's game averaging 7.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, Lithuania coach Jonas Kazlauskas responded: "You have to ask Valanciunas, not me."
In the mixed zone, the player addressed his struggles in Rio.
"I was pretty bad, you know," he said. "I've got to do something to my head."
Just twice did the 24-year-old score 10 points or more in Rio. He had 10 in Lithuania's second victory, an 89-80 triumph over Nigeria. He also had 13 in the team's 90-81 defeat on Monday.
In the game that saw Lithuania's Olympic challenge get blown off course, a 109-59 mauling by Spain - the second heaviest defeat in the country's history - Valanciunas missed all six of his shots from the floor and failed to score.
Kazlauskas did offer more comment on Valanciunas to the Lithuanian media after the press conference.
Kazlauskas on Valanciunas: 'I wish him to understand, that if you live only by talent, this fairy-tale can end one day'

So, that wasn't the tournament I expected it to be for Valanciunas. More fouls than FGs. Almost more turnovers. oof.

Hey nice rebound by Valanciunas, so he has a pulse.

(Nope, blocked on ensuing possession.)
Valanciunas is young, his best years are ahead of him. Or at least they should be.
He plays in the best league in the world. But for Lithuania this summer at the Olympics, most observers would suggest he was below average.
FYI: Jonas Valanciunas is the eighth highest-paid center in the NBA this season. https://t.co/WzHFPA5eQ0 pic.twitter.com/zGGHUKa0tq
