Jordan boost hopes with win that ends Kazakhstan aspirations

CHANGSHA-HUNAN (2015 FIBA Asia Championship) - Jordan defeated Kazakhstan, 87-73, on Monday to set up a do-or-die game with WABA rivals Lebanon on Tuesday.

Alex Legion had 23 points and five assists while Zaid Abbas finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Jordanians, who will next square off against the Lebanese with a spot in the Quarter-Finals at stake.

Kazakhstan got another solid showing from Jerry Johnson but the point guard's game-high 26 points were not enough to prevent the side from enduring a fourth defeat in five FIBA Asia Championship games.

Their 0-3 record in Group F means the Kazaks have no chance of advancing to the next stage of the competition, even if they were to beat Korea on Tuesday.

Turning point: Kazakhstan fought Jordan hard but began to lose the initiative late in the first half. Trailing 38-35 after a Johnson three-pointer, Vitaliy Strebkov's team fell further behind after jump shots from Sam Daghlas and Ali Jamal Zaghab, and two free-throws from Daghlas. The Kazaks got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Stats Don't Lie: Johnson could hardly have done anything else to help Kazakhstan win with a nine-of-13 effort from the field, including four of six from three-point range. Not enough of his teammates provided points, with only two others reaching double figures.

Game Hero: Abbas did a little bit of everything on both ends of the floor to help Jordan win with the team 14 points better than Kazakhstan when he was on the court.

The Bottom Line: The way Jordan struggled for good results early in the tournament, they might have settled for an all-or-nothing game against Lebanon. Winners of two straight, they have momentum on their side. As for Kazakhstan, their tournament might have been different had they claimed a win on opening day against Qatar instead of losing by just four points.
