Former player Conceicao named interim President of Angolan Basketball Federation

LUANDA (Angola) - An Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) extraordinary General Assembly on Saturday named an ad hoc Committee to lead the institution until July 2020.

The five-member Committee will be led by former Angolan international Gustavo Conceicao. Other members include former FAB General Secretary Antonio Sofrimento, basketball coach and analyst Anselmo Monteiro, former FAB President candidate Albino 'Bi' Figueiredo and Brandao Junior.

The decision to name the Committe was taken in conjunction with Angola provinces Basketball Associations, and it  followed the resignation of former FAB President Helder Cruz, who stepped down last month.

Cruz chaired FAB for three and half years after winning the 2016 FAB election against Paulo Madeira, who recently was elected President of FIBA Africa Zone 6.

Conceicao, who chairs Angola Olympic Committee, is familiar with FAB dossiers, having chaired FAB for eight years (2004-2012).

According to FAB, Conceicao and his team will have a lot of work to do in such a short period of time until June-July 2020.

"FAB statutes  stipulate that elections are held every four years, and this Committee steps in to carry out all FAB activities until the end of this Olympic cycle in June-July," Sofrimento explained to FIBA.basketball. "After that, there will new elections," the official added.
