FIBA PLUS evolves to better serve National Federations

MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA PLUS, one of the initiatives undertaken by FIBA as part of its current strategic priority to 'Empower National Federations', has been successfully delivering tailor-made programs to National Federations since 2019.

FIBA PLUS is an umbrella of programs designed to assist National Federations in the development of basketball in their country by helping them implement a sustainable strategic focus to reach their full potential.

FIBA has developed two programs under the FIBA PLUS umbrella, both including a planning phase and a plan implementation phase.

The FIBA PLUS Performance Program, formerly known as the FIBA PLUS Strategic Planning, is delivered individually and targets National Federations with substantial financial and staffing capacity to establish and implement strategic plans over a three to five-year scope.

The FIBA PLUS Fundamentals Program, delivered to groups of National Federations, is more adapted to small-sized organizations that need to focus on shorter plans (12-18 months).

The FIBA PLUS Performance Program was first rolled out in July 2019 with the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) and has been undertaken by more than 20 National Federations since then, across all five of FIBA's regions.

However, due to the pandemic, the program which was originally delivered in person had to be significantly adapted. Worldwide restrictions forced FIBA to adjust so that FIBA PLUS could continue to serve National Federations around the world.

Mr. Arben Fetahu, President of the Kosovo Basketball Federation (KBF) said upon completion of the program in 2020: "KBF has been the very first National Federation to take on the program exclusively online and we can say that the program has impacted our Federation tremendously. We now have a clear roadmap for our Federation that is driving us every day to move basketball forward in Kosovo. A good illustration is the vision, mission and values, revisited as part of the program, that is now painted on the walls of our new office. We also have been greatly supported in the implementation of our plan by the FIBA PLUS team to share knowledge and best practices in Kosovo with our National Leagues and Clubs."

Now in 2022, the FIBA PLUS Performance program is being conducted in a hybrid format, with the core stages conducted in person at the participating National Federation headquarters, and the first and last stages conducted online.

The newly launched FIBA PLUS Fundamentals Program for 2022, delivered to large groups of National Federations, tipped off earlier this year in July in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, with nine participating National Federations taking part from Africa. These nine federations will be followed over a 12-month period through a monitoring program to help guide them through their implementation process.
