FIBA Executive Committee meet in Singapore; celebrate resounding success of basketball and 3x3 at Paris Olympics

SINGAPORE (Singapore) – FIBA's Executive Committee have met in Singapore during an eventful weekend that featured the FIBA Intercontinental Cup and the enshrinement of the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Singapore has been host to two memorable events over the past few days, featuring the most globally diverse FIBA Intercontinental Cup in history, alongside the prestigious Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

International Olympic Committee Vice President Ser Miang Ng, pictured below, personally welcomed the Executive Committee to Singapore.

The following key topics were discussed during the Executive Committee meeting:

Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Executive Committee heard comprehensive reports on the recent and highly successful basketball and 3x3 tournaments for this year's Olympic Games, played in both Lille and Paris.

The 2024 summer of international basketball had record-breaking engagement levels on all FIBA digital platforms for an Olympic year, with record numbers across the entire spectrum of social media and website metrics for all 2024 FIBA events directly linked to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A new Olympic attendance record was set with a total of 1,078,319 spectators attending the Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments, surpassing the previous record of 1,068,032 set at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, reinforcing the popularity of the sport.

For 3x3, Paris 2024 marked the first opportunity for the discipline to play in front of live audiences, creating an exhilarating atmosphere and setting new standards for urban sports worldwide. Place de la Concorde saw sold-out crowds of 4,000 spectators daily, with thousands more gathering outside to catch a glimpse of the action, while the digital presence of 3x3 during the Olympics skyrocketed across all platforms.

FIBA Basketball World Cups – 2026 and 2027

Reports were received on the preparations for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. 

The unveiling of the visual identity for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 was recently announced on the 'Road to Germany'. The event Global Ambassador, Sue Bird, was in Paris during the Olympics to promote the event and wore a specially commissioned jacket to showcase the logo and #WeOwnTheGame hashtag.

FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying Tournaments

The Executive Committee received a full report on the recent FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying Tournaments held in August in Mexico and Rwanda. These two tournaments marked the beginning of the journey to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, increasing the number of national women's teams playing and offering them opportunities to face opponents from different regions. Hungary and Czechia won the events and have now both qualified for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments, to be played in March 2026.

3x3

The Executive Committee received updates on the most recent FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup, which was held in Vienna at the end of August. The event set new benchmarks for digital engagement and viewership, highlighting both the success of the competition and the continuing global growth of 3x3.

A report was also given on the recently concluded FIBA 3x3 Women's Series 2024. France won the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Hangzhou Final 2024, held on September 8 in China. The 2024 season saw a record 19 stops played, plus the Final, with 51 teams participating from over 30 countries. 

Club Competitions

Updates were received on FIBA's upcoming club competitions from across the Regions:

Africa: reports were given on the upcoming season 5 of the Basketball Africa League and the Road to BAL 2025, which will tip off in October.

Americas:  a report was received on the upcoming Basketball Champions League Americas Season 6, scheduled to start in December.

Asia: reports were given on the WASL Season 3, which tips off on October 14, the Basketball Champions League Asia Qualifiers, with windows starting in January, the BCL Asia set to tip off a second season in June, and the inaugural season of FIBA's newest league, the Women's Basketball League Asia, taking place at the end of the month from September 26 to 29 in China.

Europe: updates were received on the Basketball Champions League, which commences Qualification for Season 9 in Antalya, Türkiye, on September 17.

eFIBA Season 3

The Executive Committee received a presentation on the upcoming eFIBA Season 3, which will tip off in October with 61 national teams participating. The eFIBA World Finals were recently announced and will be played in the Philippines, in the city of Clark.
