FIBA Africa Youth Camp in full swing in Saly

SALY (Senegal) - Just a few days after its inauguration in Nairobi, Kenya, the four-day FIBA Africa Youth Camp resumed in the Senegalese coastal town of Saly.

The event started on Friday, September 10 and finishes September 14 before it relocates to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire on Wednesday.

A total of 45 players - 33 boys and 12 girls - with an age range from 14-17 joined a number of top basketball coaches and officials in the magnificent resort of Saly to continue the basketball development program, a partnership between FIBA and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Local basketball coaches joined coaches from other parts of the part world in what is described as a game-changer youth basketball programmes on the continent.

 

Addressing the campers, Jean Michel Ramaroson, President of FIBA ​​Africa Development Commission, said: "We wanted to organise this event across five countries but the context of COVID-19 wouldn't allow it. We are targeting 42 countries out of the 54 in Africa. This program will spread over two to three years.

"These young people will have the opportunity to take part in other camps such as Basketball Without Borders or play in the youth teams."

 

Meanwhile, Babacar Ndiaye, President of Senegal Basketball Federation reflected on the importance of the FIBA Africa Youth Camp.

Ndiaye said: "The Senegalese Basketball Federation is delighted with this programme, which is in line with our policy. We have been working with young people for years and this has given us great satisfaction.

"I can mention the [Senegalese] U19 national team which reached the [U19 FIBA Basketball World Cup] Quarter-Finals. This kind of camp allows us to continue the process of supervising young people and to follow them up.

"It will also be an opportunity for coaches to share their experience and to strengthen themselves. It is an honour for Senegal to host this camp and it shows that our country plays a major role in basketball. We will reflect on how to support our clubs who will qualify for the Basketball Africa League without interrupting the Championship," Ndiaye pointed out.
