FIBA Africa Central Board approves schedule of 2023 General Assembly and Elections

MAPUTO - The FIBA Africa Central Board convened on Wednesday, December 14 in Maputo where the 2023 General Assembly elections (2023-2027) was one of main topics of discussions. The meeting reviewed past activities and approved a number of new projects involving the game of basketball on the continent.

The meeting coincided with the 2022 edition of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women taking place in the Mozambican capital until Saturday, December 17.

The session was chaired by FIBA Africa President, Anibal Manave, while in attendance were FIBA President Hamane Niang; Executive Director Africa Alphonse Bile, Members of FIBA Africa Executive Committee, Presidents of FIBA Africa Sub-zones, and Presidents of Councils.

The Central Board met in person for the first time since the COVID pandemic. It followed a Central Board meeting held early this year via video conference.

The following key topics were discussed during the meeting:

Africa Women's Basketball League

The Central Board heard reports concerning the status of women's basketball on the continent and implemented new measures.  

Participants welcomed the return of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women for the first time since 2019 after a three-year absence due to the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic.  

The Central Board renamed the 10-team FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women to Africa Women's Basketball League, and implemented a new qualification system to the new competition. 

3x3 and Youth basketball

The Central Board was presented with reports of 3x3 activities and Youth Basketball Camps held over the past twelve months. Recommendations were made for the improvement of the sport across the continent.  

Election of new Central Board and Committees 

It has been determined that the next FIBA Africa elective General Assembly will take place in Maputo from 9th to 10th June. A number of positions, including FIBA Africa President, Presidents of FIBA Africa seven Sub-zones, Treasurer, and Competitions Committees will be up for election.
