RIO DE JANEIRO (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) – Brazil won the Super 4 Tournament at Rio de Janeiro after crushing Australia 95-67 in a game played at Maracanãzinho.
Leandrinho Barbosa and Tiago Splitter netted 15 points each for the Brazilians who dominated Uruguay 100-63 on day one.
The first quarter was for Brazil 22-14 and in the second the offense improved while their defense stayed intense to win at halftime 48-31.
Brazil had eleven scorers who made four points or more to keep the lead in the second half.
"We have consistency and we need to improve. At this stage of preparation we achieved many positive things. From now on we have to improve on all aspects to arrive 100% at the FIBA Americas Championship and achieve our goal of the title," said Leandrinho.
Anderson Varejao was key in the paint with 13 points and 9 rebounds. In the FIBA Americas Championship his performance in the paint will be key at each game.
"We had highs and lows in both games but we got the win. This tournament was important in order to show our actual status. We now have to train hard in this final stage to correct our mistakes in the friendly games," said Varejao after the game.
Adam Gibson had 22 points and Joe Ingles 16 for Australia.
