Angola ease past Guinea to finish top in Group B
YAOUNDE (AfroBasket Women 2015) - Reigning champions Angola beat Guinea in the final day of AfroBasket Women 2015 Group Phase action to finish top of Group B.
The Angolans trounced Guinea 89-47, improving their mark to 4-1 ahead of the Quarter-Finals, which takes place on Thursday.
Turning Point: Angola took control of the game early on leading by as many as 49 points. Guinea did use a 5-0 run in the third quarter, but they never posed a serious threat to Jaime Covilha's team.
Stats Don't Lie: Head coach Ousmane Sylla used the entire roster at his disposal, but they had to rely on Nadia Peruch-Niang and Mariama Toure combined for 25 Guinea points.
But, they paid the price for having short scoring options as their bench proved helpless, contributing not a single point against Angola's 60.
Game Hero: Nadir Manuel, who came off the bench for the second game in a row, sparked Angola with a game-high 21 points in just 13:48 minutes.
Bottom Line: Guinea entered the game following a morale boosting win over Algeria - their first-ever victory in the tournament history - but were unable to maintain their winning momentum as Angola ensured to bounced back from a shocking defeat to Egypt on Monday.
"It was a good win for us moving forward in the competition," said Angola point guard Fineza Eusebio. "We just to keep on winning games."
Guinea close their Group Phase with a 1-4 mark.
