GRE/BRA - Reds defeat Pinheiros to capture Intercontinental Cup

SAO PAULO (FIBA Americas League/Euroleague) - Olympiacos immediately put their imprint on the 2013-14 basketball season.

The two-time defending champions of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague have won the Intercontinental Cup in Brazil after beating 2013 FIBA Americas League winners Pinheiros/Sky on Sunday.

After prevailing in Game 1 on Friday, 81-70, the Reds rolled to an 86-69 triumph in Game 2 with Georgios Printezis pouring in 16 points and Vangelis Mantzaris and Mirza Begic contributing 10 apiece.

Printezis, a Greece international who played at EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia this summer, has had his share of big moments the past couple of years with Olympiacos.

He capped a fourth-quarter comeback in the 2012 Euroleague Final against CSKA Moscow with a game-winning shot in the waning seconds.

Printezis was a handful for Pinheiros Sky.

"We are very happy to start the season with this trophy," he said.

"After being Euroleague champions, it is very important to become the champion of the Intercontinental Cup after it is being organized again and to bring the cup to Greece."

The Reds have some new faces but once again look as if they are going to be contenders for the title in Europe.

"We have new players but our core team remains from past years and we are all getting together and adapting to the details," Printezis said.

"Pinheiros is a great and strong team and can compete against any team."

Olympiacos coach Georgios Bartzokas had kind words for Pinheiros.

"I wouldn't say that the difference between South American basketball and European basketball is that big," he said.

"Pinheiros have a very organized and serious team. The biggest difference comes with the players coming from the bench, as Pinheiros has almost played with seven players."

Claudio Mortari, the coach of Pinheiros, wasn't able to celebrate a victory in either of the two games but he was nevertheless proud of his squad.

"They were the winning team, but we are not losers," he said.

"I leave absolutely happy with this competition. We were bold, determined and the players tried to give everything."
