FIBA - Barbados power past Scotland

MELBOURNE (Commonwealth Games) - Barbados claimed fifth place in the Commonwealth Games men's basketball with a 73-63 win over Scotland on Thursday.

Scotland wasted a first-quarter advantage and another big game from Dan Wardrope as they slumped to defeat.

Wardrope was the only player of the Scottish team to score in double figures and his 26-point haul took him to 99 points for the tournament at an average of 19.8 per match.

However, the Scots, despite leading 18-15 after the opening period, could not capitalise on the shooting guard's impressive form and they had to settle for sixth place in the Games.

Wardrope said: "We should've done better. I was very tired, we were all tired because we're missing a few players. Some are away playing in Spain and some are missing through injury."

For triumphant Barbados, three players scored in double digits with Jeremy Gill leading the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Gill was delighted with his side's final placing, especially after starting off with a 75-59 defeat to England.

"This is the biggest experience for the history of our country playing in an international competition. It's very exciting, especially the crowd and all the kids in the crowd."

In the other men's match played on Thursday, South Africa took seventh spot after claiming a 65-59 win over India.

South Africa's Neo Mothiba, with 25 points and 10 rebounds, was the star of the show while Sozhasingarayer Robinson poured in 23 points in a losing cause
for India, who end the tournament in eighth place.
