AUS - Lemanis hits a busy stretch as new coach

PERTH (FIBA Oceania Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Andrej Lemanis knew he was going to be a very busy man when deciding go get involved with Australia’s national team set-up after a hugely successful career with the New Zealand Breakers.

So it is proving to be already.

On Friday, Lemanis coaches the Boomers in Perth in the opening clash of the four-game Sino-Australia Challenge.

Game 2 will also be in Western Australia while next week, the national teams square off in two more clashes in China.

In addition to getting his team ready for the FIBA Oceania Championship, Lemanis will also coach the Australian men at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, from 6 to 17 July.

He takes over that side from Ian Stacker, who stepped down from the role due to personal reasons.

"Having a style of play and a common language which filters through the entire development pathway is a smart way to build a program," Lemanis said.

"I'm looking forward to working with the emerging Boomer athletes at the World University Games.

"This will give them a feel for my expectations and I will also get a better understanding of how they will contribute to the Boomers program moving forward.

"The more time we spend together, the better opportunity we will give ourselves for success in the future.

"The better aligned the pathway and the smoother we can make the transition, the better the athletes are positioned to push in to the Boomers team."

Several Boomers in the squad for the Sino-Australia Challenge competed for the Aussies at the World University Games in 2011.

As for the forthcoming games against China, Lemanis says there was a lot of competition for places in the Boomers squad and that bodes well for the program.

"From a coach's perspective, we were really glad that it was a difficult selection process, with all players showing they had something to offer the program," Lemanis said.

"With the final 12 now selected I'm looking forward to building the synergy of our group and watching the development of this team on the international arena.

"We have six players representing the Boomers for the first time, which is a great opportunity for those players to gain experience at this level and stake their claim for future national representation."

The 2.03m forward Jesse Wagstaff will be recognizable in Perth as he plays for the NBL's Wildcats.

The Adelaide 76ers are the best represented NBL club with four players. They are Adam Gibson, Jason Cadee, Anthony Petrie and Daniel Johnson.

Cairns Taipans have Clint Steindl and Cameron Gliddon.

Sydney KingsBen Madgen, Townsville CrocodilesLuke Neville and Chris Goulding of Melbourne Tigers are in the group, as well as players in American college basketball, Igor Hadziomerovic of Boise State and Cameron Bairstow of New Mexico.
