SOPRON (FIBA U18 Women's European Championship 2016) - Laure Resimont and Alexia Chartereau scored game-winners as Belgium and France survived scares in a dramatic day of Round of 16 action.
Both teams had to watch helplessly as their opponents had shots to win, but Josipa Silov of Croatia and Gabija Meskonyte of Lithuania were left gutted as their final efforts bounced clear.
In the end, Turkey provided the only shock of the day in the very first game, surviving a stunning fourth-quarter comeback from Czech Republic to take a victory that their commanding play in the first three periods had earned.
But Latvia joined France in preserving their unbeaten record only by the skin of their teeth, with Digna Strautmane’s offensive rebound leading to Dinija Pavelsone’s last-minute basket that finally shook off a fantastic effort from the winless Israeli team.
Reka Lelik's wonderful double-double of 22 points and 11 assists enabled her team to dominate Serbia, while Spain cruised past Slovenia and Italy shut down Slovak Republic’s offence, holding them to nine points over the second and third quarters combined.
Russia capped the day with a convincing win over Netherlands, spurred by Daria Kurilchuk’s 14 points in the opening quarter on her way to a game-high 20 overall.
