SERRAVALLE (FIBA U18 European Championship 2016 Division C) - Moldova and Principality of Monaco won their first games of the Championship, as the battle for places 5-9 continues in San Marino.
Ruslan Duminic netted a free throw with four seconds left to give Moldova a 64-62 lead against Gibraltar. That proved to be the final score, as Jamie Mesilio's last gasp shot could not find its target. Duminica led the scorers with a game-high 17 points, as all of his field goals came from beyond the arc on a 5-of-11 performance from long range. Vadim Raducan scored 14 points, Gheorghe Rebeja was also in double figures with 13 points. Sergio Gil and Alex Garcia combined for 32 points for Gibraltar, who are now at 1-1.
Moldova are at 1-2, the same as Malta, after their defeat to the hands of Monaco. Their match-up finished 72-69, as both Luca Stefanovic and Nicholas Richard Formosa missed on potential game-tying three pointers. Formosa had shot 5-of-10 from the three-point range prior to his final attempt. He finished with 28 points and five steals, both team-highs.
Roman Tomatis scored 30 points for Monaco, shooting 12-of-21 from the field and adding seven rebounds to his tally. Hugo Voulfor collected a dominant double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds, while also blocking three attempts. Monaco are now on a 1-1 record.
