The newbies face a tough assignment to make it through to the Regular Season since they face Flammes Carolo Basket of the top tier in France, who have played in this competition before.
Tasked with working hard in pre-season so they can possibly cause what would represent something of an upset, are the likes of Belgian Hanne Mestdagh. She featured for Mithra Castors Braine last season in EuroLeague Women during her first year of club basketball after finishing her NCAA career at Colorado State.
The main thrust of Freiburg’s challenge is likely to be provided by 27-year-old swingman, Kristen McCarthy. The American brings experience of playing in the top tier of Italian basketball with Faenza, in French basketball with Tarbes Gespe Bigorre and in Romanian basketball with ICIM Arad. Last season she gained herself a positive reputation in the DBBL with Freiburg’s rivals SV Halle Lions.
Her compatriot and Syracuse graduate Shakyea Leary will bring the power in the paint. She possesses similarly useful minutes in Liga Femenina last season with CREF Hola, as well as court time for Salvia Prague in the ZBL during 2014-15.
Jovana Vukoje played against Leary last season when she was with Embutidos Pajariel Bembibre in Spain. She has also played in EuroCup Women previously with both Lupa Promotion Novi Zagreb and Dynamo Kyiv. Meanwhile, she has represented Serbia at international level, including recent FIBA 3x3 tournaments.
Additionally, one of Germany’s brightest young prospects Satou Sabally will return for another season with the club, as the teenager looks to continue her development by gaining valuable EuroCup Women minutes.
