Epic upset as TTT beat UMMC; big boosts for Spar Citylift Girona and Castors Braine

MUNICH (Germany) - TTT Riga have pulled off one of the biggest upsets in EuroLeague Women history after they took down reigning champions UMMC Ekaterinburg.

Struggling and winless, the Latvian side were facing the star-studded holders who were yet to taste defeat, but they ripped up the script to land a memorable knockout blow with an 89-81 success in Group A.

Swedish star Binta Drammeh led the way for the triumphant hosts with 25 points and the victory was also founded on an excellent debut from Marina Mabrey, who weighed in with 24 points to help her side get their first victory of the campaign.

"It is the biggest victory in the history of Latvian women's club basketball since Latvia regained independence," declared TTT head coach, Martins Zibarts.

"We can be proud of the work the girls have done on the basketball court and their confidence. We demonstrated amazing team basketball and stunning offense against the reigning EuroLeague Women champions.

"Also a huge four-day job was done with Marina Mabrey, who only just started playing basketball with us after a two-month break," he added.

There were also big Wednesday night wins for Castors Braine and Spar Citylift Girona too. The former rode their way to a  first road win of the season by strolling past Reyer Venezia 75-58. Center Celese Trahan-Davis underpinned a vital success for the Belgians with 13 points and 13 boards.

Spar Citylift Girona also took their second victory of the campaign as they inflicted what was a worrying third straight loss for Dynamo Kursk by beating the Russians 79-61 in what was a forgettable return to his former club for losing head coach Roberto Iniguez. Brittney Sykes added 23 points, with Naignouma Coulibaly sealing a 13-point and 11-rebound double-double.

Fenerbahce Oznur Kablo continue to roll nicely after they made it three wins in a row by locking down Famila Schio 58-43.

With new signing Laura Nicholls on board and helping to solidify their defense, the home side benefited from 15 points from Alina Iagupova.

Elsewhere, ZVVZ USK Praha  have now racked up a nice 4-1 record after climbing all over Nadezhda 87-63. Cristina Ouvina produced one of her best ever displays in the competition with a classy 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists, while Brionna Jones was unstoppable with 18 points and 15 boards.

Bourges Basket had little difficulty in taking a comprehensive 92-62 win against Gelecek Koleji Cukurova, despite the visitors re-loading their roster with a number of new faces. A perfect shooting night for 10 points, as well as 7 assists from Sarah Michel was the highlight.

Another French club getting a win on the board was BLMA, who got one over on domestic rivals LDLC Asvel Feminin 80-73. Romane Bernies starred with 18 points in a 7 of 8 shooting display and also had 5 boards and 5 assists., while Stephanie Mavunga top scored with 22 points.
