Party time in Bourges as hosts make Final after thrilling win over Galatasaray

BOURGES (France) - EuroCup Women Final Four hosts Tango Bourges Basket are looking forward to competing in Thursday's Final after completing a dramatic 69-67 comeback win against Galatasaray.

The French side will go up against Umana Reyer in the title game, with the whole of 'Le Prado'  arena breathing a sigh of relief after coming back from a double-digit deficit in the final quarter.

Turning point: The obvious turning point was the game-winning defensive play by Elin Eldebrink who did an amazing piece of recovery defense to deny Kelsey Plum on a drive under the basket with a handful of seconds remaining.

This initiated the winning fast-break bucket by Sarah Michel. However, maybe none of this would have happened witthout head coach Olivier Larfargue calling a timeout early in the fourth period, when his team were down 62-51 and seriously on the ropes. They needed that, while there was also a huge triple from Alix Duchet with a minute left, which seemed to give Bourges the belief they could complete their recovery.

Game hero(es): Alix Duchet was a star on the night for Bourges as she stepped into the game and scored a sparkling 19 points. The presence at both ends of the court from young Iliana Rupert was also critical and highly impressive. She had a fine 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 and 4 blocks steals. However, Elin Eldebrink showed that even if you have a bad shooting night, one critical defensive play can be a difference-maker.

Stats Don't Lie: Bourges hit nine triples and several in the last quarter which made the difference, while they outscored Galatasaray 29-6 in terms of bench scoring. That additional depth and belief beyond their starting five was important.

Bottom line: They will remember this win for a long time to come in Bourges as it was one that showed real guts and heart. The home team showed why they have not lost at home in the competition with their brave comeback. The defense and teamwork was essential with the experience and hustle of players like Eldebrink, Kristen Mann and Sarah Michel highly important. Now they can dream of a 2016 repeat when they won the silverware on their home floor.

While it was not always pretty, Galatasaray almost got it done, but had little to offer outside of their star names. They handled the home crowd and seemed to relish the challenge of playing on the road, using some strong defense to slow Bourges down, but then left the back door open for the hosts who took full advantage. Galatasaray will feel they should and could have won, but that lack of bench depth was perhaps telling.
