EXPLAINER - 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Draw

    In this article we will explain each step that will be implemented during the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Draw.

    ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - The clock is ticking down to FIBA Basket 2025 in August, but first here is an explanation of the draw for this year's African Championship.

    The Draw ceremony will take place on Friday, May 9 at 18:30 (local time) at the Hotel HCTA in Luanda, Angola.

    The quadrennial AfroBasket will be held in Angola for the first time since 2007.

    This year's AfroBasket will be held in the Angolan cities of Namibe and Luanda from August 12 to 24.

    How the teams qualified

    All 16 national teams participated in the 20-nation 2025 AfroBasket qualifiers, which were held over the course of three qualifying windows in February and November 2024 and February 2025.

    Teams qualified for the 2025 AfroBasket by finishing in the top three places in Groups A, B, C, D and E.

    Competition system

    GROUP PHASE - 12 to 17 August 2025

    Each team will play the other three teams in their group in a round-robin format, with a first to fourth place finish at the end of each round.

    FINAL PHASE

    This round of the tournament begins with qualifying for the Quarterfinals on August 18-19, 2025, with the winners advancing to the Last Eight.

    QUARTER-FINALS

    This round of the competition will take place from 20 to 21 August 2025.

    SEMI-FINALS

    This phase of the tournament will be held on 23 August 2025.

    THIRD-PLACE GAME

    This game will take place on final day of the tournament on 24 August 2025.

    FINAL

    The 2025 AfroBasket Final will be played on 24 August 2025.

    How the 2025 AfroBasket Draw works

    The 16 participating teams will be divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each.

    They will be divided into four pots according to their ranking in the last edition of FIBA AfroBasket 2021, but also according to the FIBA ranking.

    POT 1 consists of host country Angola, reigning AfroBasket champions Tunisia, runners-up at 2021 AfroBasket Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal, who finished third in the 2021 edition of AfroBasket.

    POT 2 includes teams that rank between 1st to 7th in the FIBA (Africa) Ranking. Those teams are: South Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria and Cape Verde.

    POT 3 represents the teams ranked from 9th to 12th in the FIBA rankings. Those teams are: Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea and Mali.

    POT 4 represents the teams ranked 13th to 19th in the FIBA rankings. Those teams are: Uganda, Rwanda, Libya and Madagascar.

    - The teams in POT1 1 will occupy the 1st position according to their draw in Groups A, B, C and D.

    - The first team to be drawn will go into Group A; the second team will go to Group B. The will be placed in Group C and the fourth team will be added to Group D.

    In the first phase of the Draw, the teams in Pots 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be drawn one after the other and will be placed in groups A, B, C and D in the order of the Draw.

    Pot for Group positioning

    To determine the position of each team in the group, 4 additional pots containing numbers will be used

    For the others, they will be distributed as follows:

    - POT A will determine positions 2, 3 and 4 in Group A. - POT B will determine positions 2, 3 and 4 in Group B. - POT C will determine positions 2, 3 and 4 in Group C. - POT D will determine positions 2, 3 and 4 in Group D.
