    Shenzhen is a coastal city in southern Guangdong Province located on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary and located very close to Hong Kong. Covering a total area of 1,997.47 square kilometers, its subtropical monsoon climate brings warmth and plenty of precipitation to the city.

    Shenzhen is a link between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and a transport hub for coastal southern China. The city leads in high-tech development, financial services, foreign trade, shipping and creative and cultural industries.

    HISTORY

    Shenzhen was established in March 1979. In August the following year, the city was turned into the country's first special economic zone. Over the past four decades, Shenzhen has transformed from a small backward border town into a modern and international metropolis, creating a miracle in the history of world development.

    ADMINISTRATION

    Shenzhen has nine administrative districts and one new area: Futian District, Luohu District, Yantian District, Nanshan District, Bao'an District, Longgang District, Longhua District, Pingshan District, Guangming District, and Dapeng New Area. On December 16, 2018, the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone in Shanwei City was officially inaugurated.

    POPULATION

    With a population of 17.66 million permanent residents, Shenzhen is the seventh largest city in China. According to the seventh national population census, the average age of Shenzhen residents was 32.5, making it one of the most upwardly mobile cities in the world.

    LANGUAGE

    The mainstream language in Shenzhen is Mandarin Chinese, also known as Putonghua. Cantonese and English are also widely used. Some public service institutions may provide multilingual services. Citizens from all over the country also use local dialects for communication.

    CLIMATE

    Shenzhen has a subtropical monsoon climate. The weather is generally temperate to mild, with plenty of rain and sunshine. The annual average temperature is 22.4 degrees Celsius. A total of 355 days a year are frost-free.

    TOURISM AND LEISURE

    Shenzhen is regarded as the capital of Chinese theme parks and tourism innovation. There are more than 100 scenic spots around the city, including man-made theme parks, natural ecological parks, coastal resorts, shopping plazas and historic sites.

    Shenzhen has a large number of coastal scenic spots, including the Shenzhen Bay, the Mangrove Nature Reserve and a 15-kilometer coastal leisure corridor in the west, with Zhongying Street, Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches, Sea World, and Dapeng Peninsula in the east.
