FIBA U18 AfroBasket
The FIBA U18 African Championship has changed its name to FIBA U18 AfroBasket. This is the major youth competition.
The tournament brings together the 12 best national teams on the continent.
It is organized by the Africa Regional Office of the International Basketball Federation.
The U18 AfroBasket was at some point known as FIBA Africa Junior Championship
The first edition of this championship was held in 1977 in Cairo, Egypt. Egypt won the first-ever U18 continental title.
To date, reigning champion Egypt and Nigeria are the most successful countries with 6 trophies each in 23 editions. Angola follows with four titles.
This is a biennial event and is an opportunity for some of Africa’s top prospects to showcase their skills and talent.
Cameroon, 30 years after its last appearance (1994), took the basketball world by surprise by reaching the final, beating some of the continent’s top teams in the competition.
This year, the competition will take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, from August 5 to 16, 2026.
The winner and runners-up of the FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2026 will earn the right to represent Africa at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2027.
