Nicaragua is located in the heart of Central America, an ideal destination for those looking for something different. Due to its two oceans, dozens of volcanoes, lakes and rivers, it is called the “Land of lakes and volcanoes”.

The name Nicaragua comes from an aboriginal word, of Nahuatl root, with which the narrow territory that today separates Lake Cocibolca from the Pacific Ocean was called during the Spanish conquest. It was taken from the cacique who dominated that territory at the arrival of the first conquerors: Nicarao. The term also came to be applied, by extension, to the tribe that occupied that region: Los Nicaraguas or Niquiranos.

Managua has been the capital city of Nicaragua since 1852. There had been an Indian settlement there before the Spanish, but the modern city was founded as Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua in 1819. About 1.3 million people live there. This makes it one of the biggest cities of Central America (after Guatemala City). The city is at the shore of Lake Managua.
