Everything you need to know: BCL Asia Qualifiers Round 2

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The BCL Asia Qualifiers Round 2 will soon be upon us and it is expected to be an exciting stretch of four days. We've got you covered with all you need to know here.

As the teams compete to keep their hopes of qualifying for Asia's flagship club competition alive, fans can be sure that the sparks will fly from start to finish.

What is BCL Asia?

Basketball Champions League Asia (BCL Asia) is Asia's top-tier club competition, making its debut this year. The competition was formerly known as FIBA Asia Champions Cup before being renamed and rebranded early 2024 in line with competitions in Europe and Americas, and has been the flagship club competition in Asia since 1981.

 

What is the BCL Asia Qualifiers?

The BCL Asia Qualifiers is one of the routes for teams to qualify for BCL Asia.

How many rounds are there in the BCL Asia Qualifiers?

There are two rounds of the BCL Asia Qualifiers, Round 1 and Round 2.

Who are the teams competing?

There were eight teams from East and South East Asia participating in the BCL Asia Qualifiers in Round 1. Four of those teams qualified for Round 2 of the Qualifiers. Those teams are, in alphabetical order, Hong Kong Eastern Basketball Team (HKG), NS Matrix Deers (MAS), Pelita Jaya Basketball (INA), Prawira Harum Bandung (INA).

The four teams that didn't qualify from Round 1 Adroit Club (SGP), Bishrelt Metal (MGL), Hi-Tech Basketball Club (THA), and Ulaanbaatar Xac Broncos (MGL).

How did the teams get here?

Each of the teams was either champions or finalists of the recent season of their domestic leagues in their respective countries. This earned them their spot to compete for a chance at becoming one of the "Champions" in the Basketball Champions League Asia.

The teams in Round 1 were divided into two groups of four according to their National Teams’ ranking in the FIBA World Ranking Men, presented by NIKE. Teams in the same group will play against each other in a round-robin format. The top team from each group advanced to Round 2 (Hong Kong Eastern Basketball Team from Group A, Pelita Jaya Basketball from Group B), while teams finishing second and third in each group went head-to-head in the Qualification to Round 2 phase to determine the remaining two spots for Round 2 (Prawira Harum Bandung and NS Matrix Deers from Group A).

What is the competition format?

The four qualified teams will play in a single-round robin format. Their records from Round 1 will not carry over to Round 2. The top two clubs will qualify for the Basketball Champions League Asia (BCL Asia).

When are the Round 2 Games?

Round 2 is scheduled to be from April 23-26.

Where are the Round 2 Games?

Round 2 will be played in Jakarta, Indonesia at the Britama Arena. The city has recently hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and FIBA Asia Cup 2022 in the recent years. The venue itself has hosted FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers games.

What is next?

The Qualifiers in Indonesia will serve as a platform for two clubs to qualify for the BCL Asia, the continent’s top-tier club competition.

There, they will join the champion teams from Japan (B.League), Korea (Korean Basketball League), China (CBA League), the Philippines (Philippine Basketball Association), in addition to two clubs from FIBA West Asia Super League.
