Ahead of FIBA Basketball World Cup, FIBA Foundation Youth Leaders to champion Sustainability under Mascot Education Program

MANILA (Phillippines) – Between April 28 to 30, FIBA Foundation conducted a program for Youth Leaders from the three World Cup hosting countries, to deliver Basketball For Good initiatives within their communities.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Draw in Manila last month provided the perfect opportunity to train 14 Youth Leaders from Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines in using basketball as a tool for positive social change.

Mascot Education Program

Sustainability is the World Cup theme for this year, and these Youth Leaders – aged between 20 to 30 years – will be responsible for disseminating this crucial message.

One of the key features of ‘JIP’ - the mascot of the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 – is the recycling basket on its back.

In collaboration with program facilitator ‘Forward Pivot’, FIBA Foundation has developed a game resource that propagates the benefits of recycling, through fun play-based basketball activities.

Youth Leadership Workshop in Manila

After two virtual tip-off sessions in April, a three-day Youth Leadership physical workshop was held in Manila to coordinate the promotion of the Mascot Education Program.

The workshop combined theoretical and practical sessions followed by Youth Leaders attending the Draw Festival. Thereafter, the Youth Leaders also had the opportunity to deliver the games of the Mascot Education program to children during the Draw Festival.

The Workshop concluded with the Youth Leaders attending the Revamp My Court activity as a practical example of Basketball For Good.

The Youth Leaders will now be tasked with popularizing the Mascot Education program under the direction of their respective Local Organizing Committees (LOC) and FIBA Foundation. Their efforts will include school visits and on-site activations to add to the social legacy of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
