Gameday 8 Top Performers: Jokic, Porzingis, Fontecchio, Hanga, Borg


MUNICH (Germany) - One could hardly ask for a better ending to the August window of the Second Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers, as the biggest stars put up big  displays for their national teams on Gameday 8, that included Saturday and Sunday action.

Kristaps Porzingis was unstoppable in Newcastle on Sunday and came up with a double-double of  29 points and 14 rebounds on a massive field goal percentage of 75 percent. The Unicorn registered an efficiency rating of 35, the highest on Gameday 8, in Latvia's 87-80 win over Great Britain. 

Nikola Jokic led Serbia to another hard-earned victory on Sunday, this time on the road.  The big man finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds on 63 percent shooting from the floor to help Serbia hold off a gigantic comeback effort by Turkey and escape with a 79-72 win from Istanbul.

On Saturday, Simone Fontecchio decided he had to do a bit of everything for Italy and collected 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, for an efficiency rating of 26, to lead the Azzurri to a 91-84 victory over Georgia at home.

Adam Hanga was in action on the same day and paved the way for a hugely important road win for Hungary, 82-79 at Czech Republic,  as he came up with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds and added 5 assists for good measure to register an efficiency rating of 25.

In the game that concluded Window 4 action on Sunday, Tobias Borg did something similar as he posted 20 points and 4 rebounds for a rating of 25 to lead Sweden to a famous road victory, 95-83 over Israel in Tel Aviv.
