Seven-time NBA All-Star Joe Johnson leads Team USA Roster

MIAMI (United States) – The United States chose their 12 players for the second window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers. The Americas power will once again be led by head coach Jim Boylen and assistants Ty Ellis and Othella Harrington and will play on their home floor at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington DC against Puerto Rico on the 24th and versus Mexico on the 27th.

The United States is 1-1 in Group D of these Qualifiers after beating Cuba and losing to Mexico in the first window that took place in Chihuahua City, Mexico.

Seven-time NBA All-Star and 40-year-old veteran Joe Johnson (free agent) leads the roster. The forward-shooting guard has previous FIBA World Cup experience with the Stars and Stripes playing in the 2006 World Cup where he helped win a bronze medal and recently played two games in FIBA AmeriCup qualifying in 2021 averaging 11-points and nine boards per contest. Others with previous national team experience are shooting guard Brian Bowen II (Iowa Wolves), who played in the last window, and point guard David Stockton (Memphis Hustle) who played in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers.

Bowen II is the only player returning on the United States roster from November’s first qualifying window.

The remaining players on the roster play in the NBA G-League, some have had experience in NBA, including center Jordan Bell (Fort Wayne Mad Ants) who won an NBA title in 2018 with the Golden State Warriors. Tarik Black (Grand Rapids Gold), Langston Galloway (College Park Skyhawks), Jared Harper (Birmingham Squadron), Juwan Morgan (Maine Celtics), Matt Ryan (Grand Rapids Gold), Rayjon Tucker (Wisconsin Herd), Paul Watson (free agent) and Justin Wright-Foreman (Birmingham Squadron) will also don the USA uniform.

"I'm excited that USA Basketball stuck with our coaching staff and I'm thankful that we were able to learn and grow together. I'm looking forward to coaching this new group of players," Boylen told USA Basketball's communications department, after learning he would return to the team. “There is a learning curve to coaching and playing FIBA basketball and the respect and experience I gained for international basketball by coaching Team USA last November is invaluable.”

The squad will begin training on the 18th of this month in Washington D.C. USA Basketball said in a statement.
