Draw

The Official Draw of the Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 took place at the FIBA House of Basketball on August 31, 2021. There were four different draws, one for each region - Africa, Americas, Asia (which includes Oceania) and Europe.

Meet the 16 countries vying for one of the America's seven spots to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023:

 Argentina

Winners of the first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup, Argentina played for the 2019 World Cup title in China. 

 Bahamas

The Bahamas played in the first round of the Americas Qualifiers for the World Cup in China. They have never taken part in a World Cup.

 Brazil

Brazil has played at every FIBA Basketball World Cup and even won the event in 1959 and 1963. After winning 9 of their 12 games in the previous Americas Qualifiers for the World Cup in China, Brazil were 13th at the event.

 Canada

Canada is seeking their 15th appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup and looking to improve on their best-ever performance of 6th in 1982. Canada finished 21st at the 32-team event two years ago in China. 

 Chile

Chile is chasing their 4th appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup and first since 1959, when they claimed 3rd place. 

 Colombia

Colombia's lone appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup was in 1982. They played in the first round of the Americas Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup and will be looking to go one step further. 

 Cuba

Cuba's most recent appearance at the World Cup was in 1994. The Caribbean nation played in the first round of the Americas Qualifiers for the last World Cup.

 Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic was impressive at the last two FIBA Basketball World Cups, including China, where they advanced from the First Round and finished 16th overall.

 Mexico

Mexico's fifth and most recent appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup was in Spain seven years ago, when they made a strong run to the Round of 16 before falling to eventual champions USA. They made it through to the Second Round of the Americas Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup but were unable to make the final 32 team list for China.

 Panama

Panama raised eyebrows with their strong FIBA AmeriCup performance in 2005 and qualified for the World Cup in 2006, in Japan. They advanced to the Second Round of the Americas Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup but did not make it through to China.

 Paraguay

Paraguay's two appearances at the FIBA Basketball World Cup were in 1954 and 1967. They played in the First Round of the Americas Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup. 

 Puerto Rico

The four-time FIBA Americas Championship for Men winners, Puerto Rico will be aiming for their 15 FIBA Basketball World Cup appearance in 2023. Their best performance in the event came when placing fourth in 1990. 

 Uruguay

Uruguay's seventh and last appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup was in 1986. They finished fourth in their Second Round group of the Americas Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup and narrowly missed out on playing at the event in China.

 USA

Recent Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalists, the United States has won the FIBA Basketball World Cup on five occasions, their most recent win was in 2014 in Spain and before that, the 2010 tournament in Turkey. The USA won 10 out of 12 of their games at the previous Americas Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup and finished seventh at the event in China.

 Venezuela

Venezuela made their World Cup debut in 1990 and have played at the event four times in total. They advanced from the First Round of the World Cup in China in 2019 and finished 14th.

  Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are hoping to reach the FIBA Basketball World Cup for the first time. They played in the previous Americas Qualifiers and advanced to the Second Round.
