NONTHABURI (FIBA Asia Cup 2021 SEABA Pre-Qualifier) - Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia have qualified for the FIBA Asia 2021 Qualifiers after finishing with the four best records in the FIBA Asia 2021 SEABA Pre-Qualifiers at Stadium29, Nonthaburi.
Champions Indonesia (5-0) swept through the competition, closely edging out second-placed Thailand (4-1) by one point, handing the Thais their only loss of the tournament. Singapore (3-2) and Malaysia (2-3) both put up a good fight against the Top 2 teams and though they took the losses here, they will get a chance to display their improvement in the next round of play. The two nations that failed to qualify were Brunei Darussalam (1-4) and Cambodia (0-5), who mustered their best effort throughout the entire five days.
Fictor Roring, Head Coach of Indonesia, can be proud of his squad that overcame furious comebacks and big deficits to not give up a single loss. The team was a dominant offensive force from start to finish, leading the tournament in points (95.8) and accuracy (48.8%). It was especially their three-point shooting where they shot 41.9% that gave them an advantage over the remaining teams.
“I think we were excellent,” Coach Roring says “We played as a team and I think level of confidence built up every day because of our training camp”.
“Jamarr [Johnson] was a factor and also a big impact for us.” Roring adds.
The naturalized Johnson played all 5 games for Indonesia and averaged 16.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists but will be remembered for icing the game against Thailand with his two clutch free throws.
The tournament showcased plenty of talented players from each team. The Champions played a well-balanced game and got everyone involved, which was spearheaded by the brilliance of point guard, Xaverius Prawiro (INA). The veteran finished as the assists leader with 6.0 per game. Tyler Lamb (THA) was the scoring leader with 22.3 points on 48.3% shooting. Singapore wasn’t able to boast as much size compared to the other teams which allowed Delvin Goh (SIN) to lead all players with 13.5 rebounds.
