Indonesia and Malaysia secure Level I qualifying spot, Kazakhstan finally win
BANGKOK, Thailand (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women 2016)- Malaysia and Indonesia guaranteed a place in the Level II qualifying round to Level I after recording victories over Sri Lanka and Hong Kong respectively on Day 4 of the FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women 2016 on Wednesday.
Both teams will now play the fifth and sixth from Level I in the second round. Before that however, they will face each other tomorrow to determine the winner of Level II.
A 12-0 run in the first quarter was enough to make sure that Malaysia’s record remained untamed. The big (20-8) 1st quarter lead allowed Malaysians to cruise easily past hopeless Sri Lanka, who are yet to win a single game.
Tan Pei Jie was the best player in the game with 26 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists, while teammate Chia Mun Yi scored 12 with 8 rebounds. Meanwhile, for the losing team, Arachichige Samarasinghe had a double- double (15pts & 15reb).
Indonesia tied Malaysia’s record later when they faced Hong Kong. The East Asians battled hard and managed to stay close, and even led at one point early on. Indonesia, however, pulled away in the 3rd quarter to win 60-38.
Lea Wolombulu finished with 15 points as well as collecting 20 rebounds for Indonesia. Her teammate Christine Tjudawan added 19 as well.
Irena Yevsyukova, with her 19 points and 15 rebounds, led Kazakhstan past Singapore, 68-48, for a first victory in the championship. The Central Asians scored 10 unanswered points right at the start and never looked back after that as they went on to record a comfortable victory.
Anastassiya Arzamastseva added another 14 points for Kazakhstan.
