Australia, Japan, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand seal spots for FIBA U17 Women's World Cup 2024

AMMAN (Jordan) - Australia, Japan, Chinese Taipei, and New Zealand have secured their tickets to the prestigious FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024 in Mexico.

The four accomplished as much after reaching the Semi-Finals of the ongoing FIBA U16 Women's Asian Championship 2023-Division A being held in the Jordanian capital.

It will be the seventh straight appearance for Australia and Japan in the U17 Women's Basketball World Cup. The two have played in the biennial conclave since its inception in 2010, with the Sapphires striking gold in 2016. The young Akatsuki's best finish, for their part, is fourth in 2012.

New Zealand, on the other hand, will be making their third consecutive trip, with the Junior Tall Ferns hoping to finish better in 2024 after ending up at 12th in the last two meets.

Competing for the first-time ever are Chinese Taipei, who were the first team to secure a spot to next year's U17 Women's Basketball World Cup during the third day of the U16 competitions.

Japan would follow suit the same day by sweeping their assignments in the Group Phase. Australia sealed their place not long after, then ultimately New Zealand, grabbing the remaining ticket via the Asia-Oceania route at the expense of traditional powerhouse China.

The four are part of the 16-team cast for the 13-21 July 2024 showpiece, which so far includes the host nation plus Americas teams United States, Canada, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.
