Madagascar clinch 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers berth

ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - Madagascar have clinched one of the four berth still in contention for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers, FIBA Africa confirmed on Tuesday.

The Malagasy were meant to host an AfroBasket Pre-Qualifiers this week, but following the withdrawal and unavailability of opponents, FIBA Africa validated their entrance to the next round.

Among Madagascar's opponents were teams from Africa Zone 5 teams who failed to qualify to the 2021 edition of FIBA AfroBasket.

FIBA Africa's announcement means that Madagascar are now drawn in Group D of the 20-nation AfroBasket Qualifiers, which comprise Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt and the Central African Republic.

Group D teams will begin their 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers campaign in February (23-25) at Cairo International Stadium Hall 2.

In their last FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers appearance, Madagascar finished 0-6 after losses to Central African Republic, DR Congo and eventual 2021 AfroBasket winners Tunisia.

Madagascar climbed five places in the last FIBA World Rankings, updated in September 2023. They currently sit at No.22 in Africa, 120th in the World.

Meanwhile, two teams from Africa Zone 1 - Libya and Morocco - are expected to face off on a two-game series in Morocco with winner joining Group B, which comprise Cape Verde, Nigeria and Uganda.

Teams from Groups B and E will begin their AfroBasket Qualifiers in February (23-25) in Nabeul, Tunisia.
