FIBA U18 Women African Championship: Team Profile - Tanzania

 

DAR-ES-SALAAM (Tanzania) – For Tanzania the expectations remains sky high despite lack of experience notwithstanding as they are set to parade in the continental showcase for the youth in Amtsirabe, Madagascar

There is not much on record as far as the team’s participation at this level of competition is concerned but there are high hopes that the team. This port city is ready for results from the August festival.

They might get some inspirations from Catherine Loishiye who  performed well in Rwanda in the 2019 regional show by posting some serious numbers.

A rampant Loishiye pumped in 35 points and pulled down 16 rebounds against Rwanda.  She was selected to the NBA academy camp in Senegal .

Her exploits were complimented by what Nelly Mbugeni also brought on board. She had a double-double of 20 points that went with an astonishing haul of 20 rebounds.

Tanzanian younsgters remain upbeat and hope to push against some of the teams in the continent with a vibrant youth programme like Egypt, Mali and Angola.

as made it clear that the only way to go forward in the game is to build on the youth.

“The emphasis has been on Youth Basketball Development through various programmes such as mini-basketball., Youth  Basketball Clinics, and Jr.NBA.

How they qualified for the 2022 U18 Women African Championship: Got a wild card ticket after finishing second in the FIBA Africa U18 Zone Five Qualifiers in Kampala in June, where they beat Rwanda 51-40 and 86-79 in a high scoring game. But lost twice to the host 64-36 and 63-43 respectively to Ugandans.
World: Tanzania has never been on this stage before.
History/Qualification: The first time Tanzania is headed  to a continental meeting. And they are going there via a Fiba Africa wild card.
Head Coach: Reymond Ngezi who coaches Orkeswa School at Monduli, Arusha is all bubbling with confidence her charges will make him and the nation proud despite venturing into the unknown.

His assistant, Maureen Sizya opined, “We will need to strengthen our point guard, shooting and post positions to help our chances. We will also polish our point guards and scorers if we are to do well.”

Outlook: Angela Tumsifu the center and Magreth Manawa who was named the best rebounder again will be key performers. The duo emerged as the shining lights during the Kampala championship.

It was no surprise that, Tumsifu, Tanzania’s pride been chosen to participate in Basketball Without Borders (BWB) in Egypt in September. For her the sky is the limit.

The other clutch player from whom a lot more is expected in the tournament is Nelious Mbugemi. She has also worked hard to cement her position at the top.
