Competition System

The African Youth Championship known as the “FIBA U18 African Championship” is a competition of the national U18 teams in Africa.

This year the competition will take place in Antananarivo, the Madagascar capital from 4th to 14th August 2022 with 10 national teams. 

GROUP PHASE

In the first phase of the tournament, the 10 teams will be divided into two (2) groups of five (5). Each team will meet the four (4) opponents of its group.

The four best teams of each group will qualify for the quarter finals.

This phase will be played over a period of 5 days for a total of 4 games per day.

FINAL PHASE

The quarter finals

From then on, the tournament will be played with single elimination matchs.

A1-B4: The first team of Group A will play the fourth team of Group B

B1-A4: The first team of Group B will face the fourth team of Group A

A2-B3: The second team from Group A will face the third team from Group B

B2-A3: The second team from Group B will face the third team from Group B

This phase will be played in two days for a total of two games per day.

The winners of the quarterfinals will qualify for the semi-finals, while the losers will play the classification matches from 5th to 8th place.

The semi-final

The two semi-finals games will be played on the same day as the classification games for 5th and 6th place.

The Final

The final and the match for 3rd and 4th place will be played on the last day.

The two best teams will qualify for the 2023 FIBA U19 World Championship.
