Day 5: Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico secure trip to Semi-Finals

BUENOS AIRES (FIBA Women’s AmeriCup) – With the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2017 Group Phase, the Semi-Finals are set and will feature Canada vs. Brazil and Argentina vs. Puerto Rico. The top three-teams from the continental championship will earn tickets to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018.

Canada claimed the top of Group A with a 4-0 record, after an 86-64 win over Paraguay. With an unusual slow start, Canada took a slight lead on the scoreboard, but watched as Paraguay chipped away from the difference with great work from Paola Ferrari, who had 14 points in the game. The second half of the game was another story as Canada took control of the game with a 45-27 half. Canada scored 50 of the team’s points from the paint and dominated the rebounding battle 58-21. Niarra Fields led the way for Canada with 25 points.

Argentina secured the top of Group A with a dominant 68-49 win over South American rival Brazil. Argentina had better rhythm from the start and escaped to a comfortable lead after a 20-9 second quarter. Argentina maintained its high-energy offense and kept adding to the difference, taking a 28 advantage during the third quarter. Brazil faded away and Argentina kept adding with 45% shooting from the field and by winning the rebounding battle 45-35. Argentina was led offensively by 18 points from Debora Gonzalez.

Cuba and Mexico said goodbye to the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, after a 62-51 win for the Caribbean team. For its part, Colombia finished its participation in the continental championship with a 62-59 win over Venezuela.

On the Semi-Finals of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, Canada will face Brazil and Argentina will face the National team of Puerto Rico, for the right to play in the Final of the continental championship on August 13.

The top-three teams from America’s continental championship will earn tickets to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 in Spain.
