Hof and Cornelius help Netherlands dodge a bullet

CHEKHOV/VIDNOE (2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - Netherlands stars Emese Hof and Laura Cornelius ensured there was no major upset on the second day of the 2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.

The center helped keep her country perfect in Group A with a superb 24 points and 16 rebounds and Cornelius harvested 20 points and nine assists as Netherlands inched past a gutsy Chinese Taipei to record an 80-74 win.

Having been soundly beaten in their opening game by Russia, Chinese Taipei showed real character and had been in the lead late in the third quarter. You-Jing Jhang and Pin Lo showed some great play for 17 and 20 points respectively.

Also in Group A, Maria Vadeeva racked up another impressive display for hosts Russia as they engaged cruise control in a 73-38 win against Argentina.

Vadeeva missed only one shot from open play as she scored 14 points, while her Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje team-mates Daria Kolosvoskaia and Raisa Musina also excelled.

Russia are one of the favourites along with the USA, who strolled to an 88-62 success against China in Group B. Napheesa Collier amassed 17 points, while A'ja Wilson garnered the same number.

After being beaten easily by the holders on the opening day, Spain are now up and running after a powerful last period carried them to an 87-64 win against Egypt.

Having trailed by as many as six points in the third quarter, Angela Salvadores and Laura Quevedo came alive and poured in a combined 45 points. The defeat was tough to take for Raneem Elgedawy who had a monstrous 26 points and 12 boards for Egypt.

Debutantes Belgium are the outright leaders of Group B after they wrapped up a 60-41 success against Mali.

It needed a strong effort and leadership for Julie Allemand who had 12 points and as many boards as Belgium slowly turned the screw, before racing clear in the final 10 minutes.

There is now a first win in the books for France as Louise Dambach scored 17 points to help stave off a comeback bid by Canada who had trailed by 17 points, before being squeezed out 58-54.

Australia are in control of Group D after showcasing their depth in a 62-48 triumph against Brazil, who tasted defeat for the first time.

Lauren Scherf and Alanna Smith shared 24 points, with the latter claiming six rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

After being torn apart by Australia on their first outing, Serbia responded in style as Bojana Stevanovic amassed a game-high 18 points to lead them to a 74-66 win against Korea who remain winless heading into the third day.
