MIES - FIBA's foundation, the International Basketball Foundation (IBF), is proud to announce that the FIBA Open 2018 is an official stop on the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency)'s #WithRefugees World Tour.
The #WithRefugees World Tour crowns the #WithRefugees campaign which, as the UNHCR describes it, "seeks to channel global public support for families forced to flee their homes and calls for all refugees to be able to live in safety, have access to education and be able to support their families."
The World Tour, which was launched on the International Day of Sport and Development for Peace (April 6), runs through to 1 October. It is made up of dozens of public events to raise awareness and inspire more action for people who have been forced to flee conflict or persecution.
The FIBA Open has invited refugees to play in the tournament, be part of the event and interact with the community. During the two-day event, a petition asking for all refugees to be able to live safely will be available for players and visitors to sign.
"By taking action, people can show solidarity and care about refugees. Each individual action counts," said Leigh Foster, UNHCR's Chief of Campaigns, Events and Goodwill Ambassadors.
