The FIBA Women's South American League begins with the participation of 12 clubs

MIAMI (United States) - The second edition of the South American Women's League will have 12 participating teams divided into three groups and a total of 24 games. The tournament will be held from Thursday March 18 to Saturday April 10, culminating with the last Final 4.

Due to the global pandemic, the tournament will be played in a bubble format in an effort to comply with the FIBA sanitary protocol for the resumption of activities in the framework of COVID-19.

Empowering national federations, women in basketball and enlarging the FIBA family are the three strategic pillars of FIBA. This tournament demonstrates FIBA's commitment to deliver on all three pillars.

"To implement any competition during these difficult times of COVID19 requires a lot of discipline and organization from anyone. I'm very proud and honored to see the impressive work that our National Federations presidents combined with all the teams participating in this event and our experienced team at the regional office have delivered to make this league a reality. I want to personally congratulate all of those involved in this project. Women in basketball is a top strategic pillar for us around the world and in particular in the Americas. Launching the second edition of this league show how committed we are, at FIBA, in enabling women to lead our game of basketball and its development," said Carlos Alves, Executive Director of FIBA Americas.

Horacio Muratore, Honorary FIBA President, said: "It brings great joy as honorary president to see that this women's league was made in South America, my home region. I want to thank the national federations and the clubs for such a beautiful job. After reading feedback from players and coaches, I am sure this is going to be a wonderful tournament. With this effort we are complying with one of the fundamental pillars of FIBA, which is women in basketball. We will continue to work hard so that in the future we can have a women's continental competition just like the Basketball Champions League Americas."

The President of Consubasquet, Marcelo Bedoya, assured: "Within FIBA's strategic plan, women’s basketball is a priority. We understood that the best way to demonstrate its importance was to offer the best of us and our skills, and that's how it was understood in every corner of our region. It's incredible to see how women's basketball has mobilized with this second edition."

The most important club event of the women's branch in South America can be watched for free from anywhere in the world with the agreement between FIBA and Synergy Sports, a company that provides an automated camera system to turn any venue into FIBA Connected Stadiums. Fans can stream each game via www.youtube.com/FIBA. The South American Women's League together with Women's CentroBasket that will take place at the end of March in El Salvador, are the two competitions in which the FIBA regional office in Miami will begin to use the technology of FIBA Connected Stadiums in the Americas.

From March 18-20, Group B will be played in Medellín (Colombia), with the presence of the hosts Leonas de Medellín, Pastoras de Lara (Venezuela), Carl A-Z (Bolivia) and Audaz Octubrino (Ecuador).
