The week's big numbers: Hill sets single-season steal record; Donar sell out MartiniPlaza in hours

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) - There were a number of notable performances in the Round of 16, but Kasey Hill of Alba Fehervar and the entire team of ESSM Le Portel stole the spotlight.

Hill surpassed FIBA Europe Cup legend Jordan Theodore with a new single-season record for steals, while the Eric Girard-coached Le Portel side erased the biggest first-leg deficit in the competition's history. Off the court, it was Donar Groningen making the headlines for selling out tickets to the Quarter-Finals clash against Mornar Bar in a matter of hours.

Like every week, we take a deep dive into the most interesting events of the gameday through the lens of numbers and look to get you up to speed on what took place.

Despite being viewed as the favorites, only three of six teams to join the Round of 16 from the Basketball Champions League progressed to the Quarter-Finals.

Two of them, Sidigas Scandone Avellino and Juventus Utena, will have to battle each other, while Umana Reyer Venezia will face off against Nizhny Novgorod from Russia.

Last season, Basketball Champions League teams registered an identical 50 percent hit rate in the Round of 16 with four of eight teams moving on to the next stage of the Play-Offs.

With eight three-pointers made against Oostende, Mornar Bar guard Nemanja Vranjes replicated the season-high mark set by Demir Insaat playmaker Erving Walker in the Second Round.

Vranjes went 8-of-11 from three-point range in his best game of the season in the FIBA Europe Cup, finishing with 29 points, while also adding 3 rebounds and 4 assists in a 90-63 win that put Mornar through to the Quarter-Finals.

Zeljko Sakic couldn't help U-BT Cluj-Napoca advance to the next stage of the competition, but it was certainly not for lack of trying. In just 24 minutes on the floor, the Croatian power forward grabbed 13 rebounds and was on pace to have a 20-board game.

Zeljko Sakic needed just over 24 minutes to get to 13 rebounds

His 11 defensive rebounds were the third-best mark in the FIBA Europe Cup this season. This is the quickest anyone has snatched up 11 boards on the defensive glass in the history of the competition.

Sakic also scored 13 points and dished out one assist.

After losing the first leg 72-55, ESSM Le Portel managed to turn around the Round of 16 tie against Dinamo Sassari in their favor with a 100-81 victory at Le Chaudron this week, which is the biggest deficit to be turned around to date in the Play-Offs.

Last season, Oostende managed to defeat Enisey Krasnoyarsk on aggregate in the Quarter-Finals despite losing the first leg in Russia by 12 points. The year before, Play-Offs were conducted in a best-of-three format and point differential was not a factor.

No one has registered more steals in a single season than Kasey Hill of Alba Fehervar. He registered two steals on the second leg of the tie against Juventus to bring his tally to 32 and surpass Jordan Theodore in the all-time leaderboard.

With an average of nearly 2.5 steals per game, Hill needed just 13 games to outdo Theodore, who finished with 31 steals in 18 games during the title-winning 2015-16 season with Fraport Skyliners.

Franklin Hassell became the sixth player in the FIBA Europe Cup this season to eclipse the 30-point mark, joining the likes of Evan Bruinsma, Dardan Berisha, DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell, Shawn Dawson and Alexander Zakharaov.

The ESSM Le Portel big man registered a double-double of 33 points and 12 rebounds and even earned the Top Performer honors after leading the French side to a 100-81 overtime win over Dinamo Sassari that erased a 17-point first-leg deficit.

The season scoring record belongs to Evan Bruinsma of Donar Groningen, who had 34 points against Bosna back in the Regular Season.

Egis Kormend captain Csaba Ferencz finished his FIBA Europe Cup campaign in rather fitting fashion, by knocking down a game-winning three-pointer to give the Hungarians an 88-86 victory against Umana Reyer Venezia.

The 32-year-old sharpshooter from Hungary leads the competition in three-pointers with 41 long-range buckets made since the start of the Regular Season with an astonishing 48.2 percent conversion rate and has hit at least one three-pointer in every single game this season.

If you take into account the four games played in the Qualification Rounds, he is 51-of-104 from downtown.

Lining up to take his crown in the Quarter-Finals, Derek Needham of Mornar Bar is second on the list with 35 three-pointers made. Other active players within a shot are ESSM Le Portel guard Tweety Carter (30) and Brandyn Curry of Donar Groningen (28).

The basketball frenzy continues in Groningen, with Donar fans snatching up all available tickets to the Quarter-Finals clash against Mornar Bar at the speed of light. Within three hours of going on sale, there were just 50 tickets left and the remainder disappeared quickly as well.

This is going to be the fourth time this season the Dutch champions will be playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,350 at the MartiniPlaza. The gym was packed to the brim for games against Telenet Giants Antwerp, Belfius Mons-Hainaut and U-BT Cluj-Napoca.
