TV Asahi, Nippon TV strike deals to broadcast World Cup games in Japan

TOKYO (Japan) - TV Asahi and Nippon TV have struck deals to broadcast the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in Japan.

Two of the largest and most established broadcast networks in the country, TV Asahi and Nippon TV have both been long-term rights holders of the Olympics, including the recent 2020 Summer Games staged in Tokyo.

These media rights deals are a testament to the significant local interest in the event, which Japan is hosting jointly with the Philippines and Indonesia next year.

The two broadcasters will also carry the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers. While Japan has already qualified for the event as one of the host countries, they are playing in the Qualifiers, ensuring that they will be at their best for the World Cup come August 2023.

Commencing in November last year, 80 national sides are in the middle of playing home and away games across six qualifying windows to secure their places in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. The Qualifiers are being played over four regions of Africa, Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe in the lead up to FIBA's flagship men's event.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 tips off on August 25, 2023, and will be played for the first time across three host nations - the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
