Solomon Island stun New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea protect home court on Day 1
PAPUA NEW GUINEA (FIBA Women's Melanesia Basketball Cup 2017) – Solomon Islands and New Caledonia opened the first ever FIBA Women's Melanesia Basketball Cup 2017 with a great show for the fans.
Surprise package Solomon islands looked strong against the diverse New Caledonia side. The experiment of using their team to build for the future hit a couple of bumps in game one against a strong Solomon Islands squad. Rose Gwali and Joycelyn Aunga Basin top-scored for Solomon Islands with 12 and New Caledonia's Diana Mountry added 12.
Fiji took on the host nation Papua New Guinea in front of the home court fans. Papua New Guinea capitalised on a sluggish start from Fiji building an early lead. They kept this momentum rolling to a take away a 9 point victory. Letava Whippy top-scored for Fiji with 19 points and PNG's Emily Koivi added 13 points.
