Levitsky and Mekel announced as FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Ambassadors

TEL AVIV (Israel)  - FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 co-hosts Israel have announced former national team captains Katia Levitsky and Gal Mekel as official ambassadors for this summer's prestigious event, which returns to Israel for the first time since 1991.

Levitsky is a three-time FIBA Women's EuroBasket participant herself, having stepped out at the 2007, 2009 and 2011 editions, eventually winning 63 caps for her country.

She also took part in the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 draw in Ljubljana last week, assisting in drawing the teams.

"As before at every meeting of the Israeli national team I have attended in my career, from the U16s to the senior national team, I am excited. It is a great honor to showcase Israel once again as the ambassador for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket that will be held in Tel Aviv," Levitsky enthused.

"I wish a lot of success to the players of our national team and I am excited for them for an unforgettable experience that they are going to participate in."

Meanwhile Mekel, who only retired from playing last summer, is the second Israeli player to have played in the NBA. He represented his nation in five EuroBasket tournaments and across his career, he played for Israel an impressive 119 times.

He also expressed his delight at being tasked with the responsibility of promoting the tournament.

"Throughout my career I felt great pride and honor to be part of the Israel national team. Once again, I am happy and excited to be an ambassador for the national team and for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket," said Mekel.

"A prestigious and festive event does not come to Israel every day and I want to wish the best of luck to our women's team and I can't wait to see the arena in Tel Aviv bursting with blue and white fans at the team's games."

FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023, taking place in Israel and Slovenia from June 15-25, will be the 39th edition of the tournament and marks the fourth time the competition will take place in more than one country.
