Colombia claim South American U17 Women's title in Barranquilla
BARRANQUILLA (Colombia) – Colombia defeated Brazil in the Final 49-44 and celebrated with the title of the South American U17 Women’s Championship 2019 in Barranquilla.
Colombia took advantage of their host condition and with a great defense dominated the Brazilians to capture their third title in the category (1995, 2011 and 2019).
Naylee Cortés was crucial in the triumph by stealing a ball in the middle of the court and then scoring a lay-up to put Colombia ahead 46-41, with 55 seconds left. That action practically sentenced the game. Cortés commanded the Colombian offense with 14 points and six rebounds.
Daniela González, as was customary throughout the competition, also stood out for the winners with 12 points and 11 rebounds and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 19.0 points and 13.0 rebounds.
For its part, Argentina, took home the bronze medal and the last ticket available to the FIBA U18 Women’s Americas Championship 2020, after defeating Ecuador 40-33.
Genesis Toledano (10 rebounds), Federica Del Bosco and Natalia Tondi scored nine points each for Argentina. For Ecuador, Genesis Zabaleta contributed 11 units and Samy Bacilo eight points and 11 boards.
Uruguay took the fifth position after defeating Paraguay 73-49. Camila Kirshenbaum with 27 points and Emilia Larre Borges with 18 and 10 rebounds, stood out for the charrúas. María Marín and Jael Benítez contributed 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Paraguayans.
Seventh place corresponded to Chile after sweeping Venezuela, 70-36. Antonia Andaur shined with 30 points, while teammate Barbara Torres added 17 accountants. For the vinotinto, Stefany Ferrer closed with seven goals.
