Canada, Chile, Puerto Rico, and USA are Semi-Finalist

AYSÉN (Chile) - The teams from Canada, Chile, Puerto Rico, and the USA won their respective Quarter-Finals to advance to the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2019 Semi-Finals. In addition, the Semi-Finalist earned tickets to the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2020.

Chile adjusted to an effective zone defense and with a dominant 23-6 last quarter, the Chileans secured the 56-43 win and celebrated with their fans.

The Chileans were erratic in the first half and half-way through the third quarter they were down, 34-26, but at that moment coach Warren Espinoza adjusted his team to a zone defense that changed the curse of the game.

Ecuador did not find a way to get to the basket and the long-distance shots did not go in, a situation that helped Chile discount from the difference and then take the lead on the scoreboard. In the first six minutes of the last quarter, with a 15-2, Chile took a 48-39 advantage. That gap continued to grow in favor of the home team.

Fernanda Ovalle was the figure of the game with 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Chilean team. Valentina Ojeda added 13 points and 16 rebounds, while Catalina Valenzuela contributed 12 points. Blanca Quiñonez with 18 points and Samy Bacilo with 13 points and 12 rebounds lead Ecuador’s offense.

In a hard-fought match from beginning to end, Puerto Rico was better in the most important moment of the game to overtake Mexico, 50-48. Paloma Garcia scored after an assist from Nina de León, with 28 seconds left, to give the Boricuas a 5-point advantage.

Mexico countered with a three-pointer from Evelyn Quiroz, with 15 seconds left, but then in their last possession, they could not score because of the effective Puerto Rican defense.

Garcia with 13 points and six rebounds, led Puerto Rico. Valenzuela was the best for Mexico with 17 points and 14 boards.

The United States once again showed its strength and dispatched Brazil with a wide margin of 107-32.

With a combination of a suffocating defense (24 steals), the control of the boards (72 - 33) and a balanced attack (five players with double digits) left the Amazonians without opportunities.

Sonia Citron led the annotations with 16 points. Lauren Betts with 15 points (14 rebounds) and Londynn Jones with 14 points, followed suit. For the Brazilians, Raiane Dias finished with eight points.

In the first game of the day, Canada, with a solid start, dominated El Salvador for a 61-15 win.

The physical strength of Canada made its defense an impenetrable barrier, while in attack they did damage from all fronts, mainly under the basket and in transition.

Avianna Thompson and Tara Wallack were the top scorers for Canada with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

In the Semi-Finals, which will be played this Friday, Puerto Rico will face the USA and Canada will face Chile. The winners will go on to play at the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2019 Final, while the losers will play for the Bronze medal.

In the Reclassification Round, Mexico will face Brazil and El Salvador will play against Ecuador.
