Propose A Project 2024: Record Number of Applications Received

MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA Foundation’s flagship ‘Propose A Project’ program supporting Basketball For Good initiatives world-over, has received a record number of applications in the latest 2024 cycle.

Inspired by the belief that basketball is a powerful medium through which to educate and empower youth, the FIBA Foundation runs the ‘Propose A Project’ platform worldwide. The goal is to support initiatives that address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using basketball as a tool for positive change in their respective societies.

67% Increase in Number of Applications

This year, over 200 applications were submitted, representing an impressive increase of 67% over 2023.

Applications were submitted from 89 countries across all five continental regions, with 112 entries coming from Africa alone.

Out of the total received applications, one-third were shortlisted and recommended by the Basketball For Good Advisory Committee. The FIBA Foundation Board made the final approval of the esteemed 58 projects selected to be supported.

Underlining FIBA Foundation’s deepening commitment to ‘Propose A Project’, 2024 is seeing a 100% budget increase from the previous year besides the 3,300 basketballs that will be distributed free of cost.

Promoting Equality, Inclusion & Togetherness

This year, the popular categories under which applications have been received range from ‘Equality & Inclusion’, ‘Education & Culture’, ‘Health & Wellbeing’, ‘Peace & Conflict Resolution’, and ‘Climate & Environment’.

Some of the notable causes being addressed include supporting the self-development of young women in rural areas, leveraging basketball as a means for championing environmental sustainability, and promoting mental health through sports participation and psychological education.

For example, in Oceania, the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea is encouraging unity in local schools by fighting cyberbullying and school violence.

In Africa’s Sierra Leone, BLYSEF is undertaking an innovative afterschool program aimed at combating the rising epidemic of youth drug use.

In the Americas, across Costa Rica, Cuba, and Ecuador, Mini Basketball is used to foster education, health, and inclusion.

Within Asia, the Qatar Basketball Federation is integrating the hearing-impaired and children with disabilities into society through basketball.

In Europe, EPAPSY Greece is aiming to promote mental health through sports participation and psychological education.

The selected projects are now receiving financial grants and/or basketballs to support their successful project implementation. Additionally, they will also benefit from being part of the larger ‘Basketball For Good’ community, with additional opportunities for exchange, mentoring, and support.

Applications for next year’s Propose A Project will be launched in January 2025.
