"It's all about defense" for Australia's Tracy York in their search for Oceania Gold
GUAM (FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Championships) – Australia advances to the Gold medal game with a dominant performance against Guam. FIBA.basketball caught up with Australia Head Coach Tracy York after the game.
What has been your main focus during the tournament to this point?
“What we wanted to do was no matter what the score we wanted to keep playing the same way. Defense was a big focus for us. We have always been playing like we are preparing for a challenge.”
What will be the key factor for the Sapphires to take home the Gold?
“For me, it's all about defense. We could have sat back and played defense in the half court during these games but we were preparing for this Gold medal game. Defense is really important because if you can shut some people down, you can build off that momentum and push the tempo.”
Australia's Cassidy Gould at the University of Guam Fieldhouse
With their win over Guam, Australia has secured a top two (2) spot in this year’s event. This qualifies them for a spot in the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Championships 2018.
What is your opinion on the new qualification system through Asia?
“It's definitely going to be different, this isn't anything Australia has done before. It creates a new level, we will need to adjust to the teams and playing style in the region. We're happy to be there but for now, we're going to focus on having a game tomorrow night, first.”
Australia will take on New Zealand in the FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Championship 2017 Gold Medal game.
