Making history: Tango Bourges become first French club to win SuperCup Women
BOURGES (France) - There were scenes of joy inside Le Prado as home court fans celebrated watching Tango Bourges lift the SuperCup Women title for the first time.
The reigning EuroCup Women champions upset the 2022 EuroLeague Women winners Sopron Basket by recording a landmark 65-44 success.
It is also only the second time in history that a EuroLeague Women champion has not won the competition and comes just 12 months after Valencia Basket Club blazed a SuperCup Women trail by defeating UMMC Ekaterinburg.
Tango Bourges were led by Canadian frontcourt star Kayla Alexander who racked up a fantastic double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds to be crowned MVP.
With little to separate the teams at half-time, as the hosts headed to the locker room with a 29-28 advantage, Bourges came out in the third quarter and completed a defensive lockdown. They restricted Sopron to just 8 points in the period and then put their foot on the gas to coast to the win.
As well as Alexander, Bourges also prospered from Laetitia Guapo impressing in the backcourt with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Meanwhile Jelena Brooks posted an eye-catching 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals in defeat.
Tango Bourges also sealed a historical chapter for French basketball by becoming the first club from the country to win the SuperCup Women trophy.
They are also the seventh different club to put their name to the silverware, joining former winners UMMC Ekaterinburg (2013, 2016, 2018, 2019), Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje (2009, 2010), Perfumerias Avenida (2011), ZVVZ USK Praha (2015), Dynamo Kursk (2017) and Valencia (2021).
