African Basketball - Highlights to look out for in 2023

 

ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - The last 12 months offered some fascinating tournaments in African basketball scene with hundred of hours of games streamed live on FIBA's Youtube Channel, but 2023 won't be much different. 

There is so much to watch out for this year, including the return of the the quadrennial FIBA Basketball World Cup that will take place in August/September.

Here's a list of tournaments, involving African countries, scheduled for 2023.

FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers (February 24-26)

The last four tickets still available for African countries for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be determined in February in Angola and Egypt when the two nations host the last games of Groups E and F.

After Cote d'Ivoire last August became the first African team to qualify for the 32-nation World Cup, which is scheduled for Indonesia, Japan and Philippines, most of the remaining 11 teams still stand chances to qualify.

2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Draw (April 29)

Two months after the end of the World Cup Qualifiers, teams will find out their opponents when FIBA host the World Cup Draw in Manila. 

The 32 teams chasing glory at next year's FIBA Basketball World Cup in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia will on April 29 discover just how exciting their paths will be at the tournament.

Basketball Africa League (March, April and May 2023)

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is set to return for its third season.

The 12 club teams from 12 African countries will play a total of 38 games in Dakar, Senegal; Cairo, Egypt and Kigali, Rwanda over three months in 2023.

It will start with the Sahara Conference scheduled for March in the Senegalese capital, before Cairo takes hosting duties in April. The eight-team BAL Playoffs is scheduled for May (21-26) in Kigali, Rwanda.

FIBA AfroCan (July 2023)

The FIBA AfroCan - a new national team competition aimed for players based on the continent of Africa -  is set to return for the first time since 2019.

The AfroCan Qualifiers are expected to run in February for nations that won't compete in the World Cup African Qualifiers. 

The following teams qualified teams for the second edition of the FIBA AfroCan by virtue of reaching the Semi-Finals of the last edition that held in Bamako, Mali: DR Congo (Champions), Kenya (runners-up), Angola (third-place), and Morocco (fourth place).

The host country for the 2023 FIBA AfroCan is yet to be determined. 

Women's AfroBasket (July/August 2023)

The 12-nation biennial FIBA Women's AfroBasket is scheduled to return in late July although the qualification round is expected to take place early next month. 

The following teams have qualified for the final round by virtue of reaching the Semi-Finals in 2021: Nigeria (champions), Mali (runners-up), Cameroon (third-place) and Senegal (fourth-place).  

The African Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament is set to be held between August 12-20.

FIBA Basketball World Cup (August 25 to September 10)

FIBA's flagship tournament is set to return to the Asian continent for the second time in a row after China hosted the 2019 edition of the tournament.

For the first time in history of the competition, the FIBA Basketball World Cup will be hosted by multiple nations in Indonesia, Japan and Philippines.

Women's Basketball African Championship (December 2023)

The only competition for women's team clubs in Africa is scheduled for December 2023.

OTHER COMPETITIONS

FIBA Africa U16 Championships (Girls/Boys - Dates and site yet to be determined);
Road to BAL (November 2023);
FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup (Women/Men) - June/July 2023 - Egypt and Madagascar will represent the continent in the men's competition while Mali and Egypt will carry the African flag in the women's event.
