A tale of digital innovation: FIBA 3x3 event management tool used in eSports competition for first time ever

BUCHAREST (Romania) – FIBA and pioneer 3x3 private promoter Sport Arena showed how innovative and flexible the FIBA 3x3 digitals tools could be. For the first time, the free web app FIBA 3x3 Event Maker and the global platform play.fiba3x3.com were not used to run your typical 3x3 basketball event, but a series of virtual events, the Raiffeisen Bank eSport Arena Streetball Tour.

The first season of the 3x3 basketball online competition was played on NBA2k20 Blacktop mode for both PlayStation and Xbox and featured a total of 5 events and more than 180 players. The livestream generated over 200,000 views.

In 2020, the FIBA 3x3 technology team adapted the FIBA 3x3 event management tools so that they allowed the organizers, players and fans to follow the competition with a results repository, brackets and even season standings in a dedicated eSports environment.

Sport Arena would usually host dozens of FIBA 3x3 endorsed events in Romania each year. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the Romanian 3x3 enthusiasts to meet on the court in 2020. So instead, the promoters brought the community together on a virtual online court – yet kept the competitive spirit intact.

Congrats to Daniel Bratu aka ‘IamNotDanny’ and 14-year-old Razvan Popa aka ‘xMonst3rRO’ who won the Xbox and PlayStation categories respectively.
