Countdown to the Play-Offs: 10 things you need to know

MUNICH (Germany) - The 2020-21 FIBA Europe Cup season is set to resume later this month with the eagerly anticipated Play-Offs as the top 16 teams continue their quests for the title.

The Round of 16 games and Quarter-Finals will both take place across three hubs in Botevgrad, Bulgaria; Oradea, Romania; and s'Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in single elimination ties.


As we count down the days until action resumes, we give you the low-down of things you need to know before the knockout phase gets underway.

Thomas Van der Mars - Top Performer on Gameday 1 - is the only player to rank amongst the top TEN in the points and rebounds averages charts. The Dutch center posted 20.5 points and 8.0 rebounds through three games of the Regular Season for Heroes Den Bosch.

There were NINE occasions of teams scoring 90+ points during the Regular Season - Arged BMSLAM did so twice, but no team has yet reached the century mark. Heroes Den Bosch set the season high in their 99-98 win over Donar Groningen.

Denys Lukashov handed out EIGHT assists on two separate occasions for BC Prometey - four other players matched the season-high feat - Jabril Durham, Taurean Green, Anthony Ireland and Patrick Miller.

During the Regular Season, SEVEN games were decided by three points or less with more competitive games expected in the knockout stages. Two involved BC Balkan as they secured back-to-back three-point victories to navigate their way out of a tough Group D.

This is season number SIX of the FIBA Europe Cup. There have been four previous winners from three different nations and there are currently 11 different nations (Belgium, Greece, Italy, Israel, Netherlands, Poland, Romania Russia, Switzerland and Ukraine) represented in the Round of 16 with a new club name guaranteed to be on the trophy.

There were FIVE players that scored at least 50 points during the Regular Season with three progressing with their teams. Olivier Hanlan (Iraklis BC) was second with 63 points followed by Brandon Taylor (UNAHOTELS Reggio Emilia) and Marquis Addison (BC CSU Sibiu).

There are FOUR teams still unbeaten in this season's competition: Arged BMSLAM Stal, BC Parma, BC Prometey and Iraklis BC all had perfect records in the group phase. No previous winner of the competition has been unbeaten throughout the entire season.

The Play-Offs will take place across THREE hubs from March 23-26 with games taking place in Oradea (Romania), Botevgrad (Bulgaria) and s'Hertogenbosch (Netherlands).

Out of the four previous winners, TWO have been Italian clubs with UNAHOTELS Reggio Emilia looking to be the third following the triumphs of Reyer Venezia and Dinamo Sassari. The other winners came from Germany (Fraport Skyliners) and France (Nanterre 92).

Only ONE team out of the 16 remaining participants has previously reached the FIBA Europe Cup Quarter-Finals - BC Kyiv-Basket did so in the curtailed 2019-20 campaign, but were beaten by Pinar Karsiyaka, 177-138 on aggregate.
