Quarter-Finals confirmed after favorites secure safe passage
BOURGES (FIBA U16 Women's European Championship 2017) - The FIBA U16 Women's European Championship 2017 has split into two distinct parts after eight nations stamped a passport to the Quarter-Finals.
As the losing sides contemplate fighting for their Division A lives, the frontrunners are now within touching distance of qualifying for the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2018 - as well as reaching the podium in Bourges.
And, there was something of a surprise as Poland made the Last Eight for the first time in almost a decade. A rapid-fire start and 16 points from Wiktoria Kuczynska provided the foundation for a 57-50 win against Czech Republic.
Spain coasted into the Quarter-Finals as they produced a second-half whirlwind to blow away Netherlands 68-30 with Raquel Carrera starring as usual with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.
Italy had to work hard to make it, eventually beating Turkey 70-66 in a nail-biting affair, having led by as many as 17.
France had a below-par opening 15 minutes against underdogs Romania, but belatedly clicked into gear to deliver the locals some joy with a 68-25 triumph. Iliana Rupert claimed a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
In contrast, Germany were typically relentless from the tip-off against Lithuania as a standout 23 points and 15 boards from Emily Bessior catapulted them to a 73-47 win.
